In mathematics, the positive value of a real
number, irrespective of its sign, indicated
by a pair of vertical lines. Thus |3| is 3;
and |-5| is 5. For a complex number, the
modulus is its distance to the origin when it
is plotted on an Argand diagram, and can be
calculated (without plotting) by applying
Pythagoras' theorem. In general, the modulus
of the complex number a + bi is `sqrt'(a^2 +
b^2).
